"Why are you telling me this, Mark?" Sandra asked, not really wanting to hear any more.
"Because I want you to know that Peggy and I aren't together anymore. We'd stopped seeing each other for good over four months ago, although she keeps trying to get me back. She's very clingy, physically, as you saw last night. And sometimes she can feel like she's threatened when she sees me talking to another woman, especially one as beautiful as you."
Sandra felt her heart skip a beat, but tried to ignore it.
"So what does this mean then?" she asked. "Are you two together or not? It seems like she thinks you are."
"No, we're not together," Mark explained. "She and I are through. And the reason I'm telling you this, Sandra, is because ... I have feelings for you."
Sandra's heart skipped another beat, and it was harder to ignore it this time. Beside her, the kettle began to boil and she turned it off.
"I see," she said noncommittally. As she poured hot water into the mugs, soaking the teabags, she heard the sound of a chair scraping back along the floor. She didn't turn around, focusing on her task at hand. However, as Mark's hands placed themselves over hers she felt herself freeze.
"Sandra," Mark whispered in her ear, and she closed her eyes. She could feel the warm tickle of his breath against her ear, could feel the muscles in his fingers even though they were placed so delicately on top of hers.
"Mark," she whispered back, and she felt his body move slowly up against hers. He softly nudged his nose in her hair and she could hear his deep breathing. His stomach and chest pressed up against her back, his hips against her buttocks. It felt so comforting, so safe to have his body embrace hers in this manner.
"Sandra, I can't stop thinking about you," Mark whispered. "There's something about you that's so ... comforting. I feel so right when I'm with you."
Sandra moved her fingers softly against Mark's, intertwining them with his.
"Mark," she whispered again, but she was unable to say any more.
